With Raymonde taking a break to work on the second This Mortal Coil album, Fraser and Guthrie made up the Cocteaus for the first full-length follow-up to Treasure. Rather than trying for a full-band approach, Fraser and Guthrie instead created a much more simply beautiful effort, with a relaxed air to it.

New-Wave Cocteau Twins. Band Name Cocteau Twins. Album Name Victorialand. Released date April 1986.

The album’s sound is a further exploration of the ethereal soundscapes they had created masterfully with Treasure, but taken in a much more ambient direction. Due to the absence of Simon Raymonde, the remaining duo of Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie opted for an almost entirely percussion-less album. The opener Lazy Calm is a pretty to the point introduction, as what you’ll find there is essentially what’s expanded on for the rest of the album. The guitars are incredibly subtle and spacy, much like an icy mist.

Off-white stationary. Interesting. 45 speed. Interesting. No drum machines. Interesting. This artifact feels like handling a piece of soapstone. I give no review of the music itelf, just give it a whirl and hearsee for yourself. But no, really, this gets slated into the "indy/prog/exp" (? d:o) top 10 from me as well. agreed.

so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful, so beautiful....and so beautiful

This is in my top 10 albums of all time, and my favorite from the Cocteau Twins. Put on a good pair of headphones, close the curtains, maybe light a few candles, lie down somewhere comfortable, and be prepared to drift off into another universe. It's some of the most genuinely "psychedelic" music ever recorded, at once alien and familiar; it's just as cold and crystalline as the album's name and artwork suggest, but will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. It's just a perfect record from a band who were at the top of their game when it came out. They released Victorialand, Love's Easy Tears, and the Moon and the Melodies all in the same year! I hope I live long enough to see another band come along who are as prolific, consistently good, and just utterly SINGULAR in every sense of the word as the Cocteau Twins were.
Androrim
Yes it is thank you for input in 2018 !
Anarawield
I believe the first pressing comes with a poster inside.
Lonesome Orange Kid
I know the Ireland pressing of this album is apparently translucent when put up to light, but is it true with the UK pressing as well?
Hasirri
No the uk first pressing is not translucent. The Irish one is for sure.
Juce
For some reason this record must be played in 45 RPM, not 33 RPM.

The very best of the Cocteau Twins releases in my opinion. I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard it. I was 15, at my friend Kyle's house, and he put this on - apparently it was his brother's album. And it totally changed everything for a few years. A stunning album.
Stan
Undoubtly the masterpiece in the rich discography of Cocteau Twins. It's not pop or rock, it's not cold wave unlike the first albums (Garland and Head Over Head), it's something else, very smooth, so eerie. With Victorialand, Cocteau Twins creates a unique sound, often copied never equaled, with Robin Guthrie's cristalin guitar (what a splendor !) and the soprano voice of Liz Frazer, so far away between Oceans and Heaven. The first dream pop music. The most amazing music i have heard, plenty of sweetness, purity, "luxe, calme et volupté" like Baudelaire wrote in one of his poems.

A truly original band from their time. That is true praise in itself !I would have loved to see this band live!
Adokelv
Play the vinyl at 33 speed for a more rewarding ambient experience.

gerryc: I was genuinely playing this album @ 33 for about a year when I first got it. I had no idea it was on the wrong speed, I just thought that they'd moved into an all-over new ethereal direction and I absolutely loved it.I only realised my error when I heard it on CD. It just sounded way too fast.
you secret
Yeah it took me 10 mins to realise when i put it on. It works at 33 too. Like having two different LPs in one!
Tojahn
Don't think so as vinyl was cut at 45RPM for official release.
Arcanescar
I just picked up a copy of this but have not yet played it. I was wondering about the "45" on the label and you've implicitly answered my question.Should we update the data to read 45RPM?

"Victorialand" creates a fantastic, crystalline atmosphere that you wish would continue evolving beyond the album's short thirty-odd minutes. Thankfully dispensing with the thudding drum machine of earlier records, there's more space for the gently reverberating and shimmering sounds and Liz Frazer's unique vocals. The songs are sweet, melodic, memorable and do not tire with repeated listening. Timeless, flawless and highly recommended.
Rivik
This is my favorite chillout album of all time, and probably my favorite rock album of all time too. I've enjoyed it on many sunday mornings for over a decade. A pure acoustic album with nothing but Robin's guitar and Liz's voice plus some occaisional synth pads (on "Lazy Calm") and organs ("The Thinner the Air). Richard Thomas (from Dif Juz) played saxophone and tablas on "Lazy Calm" and "Feet-Like Fins". Masterfully multilayered, it bridges between ambient and rock. A timeless classic that was miles ahead of its time. This album is so essential (and I play it so much over the years) that I've already gone through 3 copies of it. Like the previous comment suggested, this is the voices of angels singing from heaven. You'll never hear anything so hauntingly beautiful.
Centrizius
What does delight sounds like? How do angels sing? What do sirens whisper in your ear? Try Victorialand and all those questions will be answered. Infinite beauty built for eternity.
Larosa
Just Elizabeth and Robin playing with more accoustic treatments of their sound. A short sweet perfumed arc of an album, and probably the most frail and delicate sounding (I mean that in a good sense) album of the cocteau twins. Much more relaxed and a hint somewhat at things to come towards the Four Calender and later years.
