East Side Story is the fourth studio album by new wave group Squeeze. The album peaked at number 19 in the UK Albums Chart, spending 26 weeks in the listing. The album was a definite break with Squeeze's "New Wave" sound, as it contained songs influenced by rockabilly, R&B, blue-eyed soul, Merseybeat, and psychedelia among other genres. It also contained Squeeze's last top 10 UK single, "Labelled with Love"

Squeeze remain one of the greatest pop bands ever, and in their late '70's and early '80's era, they were deservedly drawing comparisons to Lennon and McCartney, without being Beatle derivatives. That was one hell of an endorsement, and no doubt a very difficult one to uphold. After their second album "Cool For Cats" and the third, the excellent and damn near impossible to find "Argybargy", Squeeze finally hit the big time, however briefly with the pop tune "Tempted"

Squeeze: East Side Story They're finally beginning to show the consistency that's the only excuse for obsessive popcraft. The songs are imaginative, compassionate, and of course hooky-the warped organ on "Heaven" bespeaks divine intervention. And with Elvis Costello coproducing, the music is quite punchy, though I wouldn't go so far as to say it rocks.
