Released on the 3rd Stone label in February 2001, Returning Jesus is British art rock band No-Man's fourth album. Additionally, having signed to Lava/WEA, the increasing profile of Steven Wilson's work with Porcupine Tree brought the No-Man name to a new audience.
Returning Jesus (CD, Album, Unofficial). Returning Jesus (Complete Sessions) (3xLP, Album, Ltd, RE, Pur).
Sleeve Notes: This set comprises all of the music written and recorded for the Returning Jesus album. A1-C9 is the original album as issued in 2001, C10-D12 were issued as bonus tracks on the Carolina Skeletons EP, and D13-D16 are from the All That You Are EP. Some of the songs were written and demoed as early as 1994, even pre-dating sessions for the previous No-Man album Wild Opera (released 1996), but definitive mixes were not completed until 1999, during which time the songs evolved through a series of demos and alternate arrangements.
''Returning Jesus''' (2001). Together We're Stranger (2003). In keeping with other No-Man releases, "Something Falls" reuses previous Steven Wilson music, reinterpreting the guitar progression from "Spiral Circus" (on The Sky Moves Sideways by his main band, Porcupine Tree).
The fourth No-Man album proper shows that the duo doesn't simply continue its quality into another decade, but continues its bent for exploration. If not focused on beats and loops this time around, in terms of taking the signifiers of "mature" music - string accompaniment, delicacy, understatement, and more - and giving them life and real meaning, No-Man hits another indisputable high with Returning Jesus. Tim Bowness' voice is still a seductive, encompassing flow of words and emotion, while Steve Wilson seems to be ever more the musical polymath in life.
