Following the surprise success of novelty hit "Dead Skunk" on Loudon Wainwright's first full-band production, Album III, he headed to Nashville to cut Attempted Mustache with producer Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, et al) and some hotshot country musicians. There's not much country flavor to the album; like its predecessor it alternates between solo acoustic tunes and band-backed folk rock

Attempted Mustache is the fourth album from Loudon Wainwright III. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee with producer Bob Johnston and was released in 1973 on Columbia Records. Wainwright said that "I Am the Way" was partly inspired by Guru Maharaj Ji's appearance at the Millennium '73 festival in December 1973. Johnny Cash covered the song "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" live on his album American Recordings. The Swimming Song" – 2:26. Bell Bottom Pants" – 2:27.

His father, Loudon Wainwright J. was a columnist for Life magazine. His sister, Sloan Wainwright is also a singer, while his children Rufus and Martha are both established singer/songwriters. Their mother’s the late and well respected musician Kate McGarrigle. The three albums you have here were recorded over a three-year period between 1972 and 1975, and whilst they form the bulk of Wainwright s rockier sounding albums they also represent a period where Wainwright also experienced the very height of his popularity.

Loudon Wainwright III Wainwright writes with more precision and imagination than any other singer-songwriter of the current boom, and his melodies stick with you. He sings and plays with such authority that even though this record features only voice and acoustic guitar it's powerful musically. I enjoy this record quite a bit, but I admire it more, and sometimes I don't like it at all. B-. Album II In which Wainwright untwists the dense too literal and/or analytic to qualify as metaphor-that made his first album so hard to take, though for those who'd like to sample the mode "Be Careful, There's a Baby in the House" is as good as it gets
